LIMA – Richard Ray Banks

Richard Ray Banks, 60, of Williamsburg, VA., formerly of Lima, died June 14, 2003, at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA. Following a year long battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.  He was born July 8, 1942 in Lima to William and Ozzie Harris Banks Sr., who preceded him in death.   He married Jean Weir, who survives.  Mr Banks was working as a support enforcement specialist for the child Support Enforcement Division for the Commonwealth of Virginia.  He retired in 1981 from the Army as a chief warrant officer 2, after 20 years.  He enlisted in the Army in 1961 and had served with the Military Police and Criminal Investigation Command.  He served two tours of duty in West Germany, South Korea and South Vietnam.  He earned several awards for meritorious service including the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign medal and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm.

He was a graduate of Lima Senior High School and St. Leo College, where he received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

Survivors also include a son, Rick R Banks, who is serving in the Army in Germany; a daughter, Ingrid B (David) Washington of Hampton, VA; three brothers; William Banks Jr and Noel Banks, both of Lima, and Charles Banks of Williamsburg, VA; a special aunt, Goldie Newsome of Lima; four grandchildren, Isaiah and Jeremiah Washington, Francheska Sanchez and Chay Patterson, a goddaughter, LaToya Roots of Williamsburg, VA; and several nephews, nieces, other relatives, loving friends and co-workers.

Services were held June 19 at Fort Eustis Regimental Chapel, Fort Eustis, VA.  The Rev Felton Hawkins officiated.  Burial was in Hampton Memorial Gardens, with military rites.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 895 Middletown Blvd, Suite 154, Newport News, VA  23606.  Arrangements are by Ponie’s Funeral Home, Surry, VA
