LIMA – ROGER L MILLER

Roger Miller, 57, died at 12:40pm February 20, 2001 at his residence.

He was born April 9, 1943, in Lima to John L and Pearl A Roberts Miller Sr, on August 14, 1965, he married Betty J Wallace who survives

Mr Miller retired in 1998 as an administrator for Lima City Schools after 30 years. He had also served as assistant superintendent of pupil personnel services and administrative technology for seven years, principal for nine years and associate principal for four years, all at Lima Senior high School and assistant principal for five years at South Junior High School.  He initiated several programs at the schools, including the Lima Senior Scholarship fund, the Advanced Placement Program, Project Democracy, the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame, the Lima/Allen Gang Coalition and the African American Excellebration Awards. He had written several articles on school violence for educational publications and journals.

He was president of the Lima Education Association, the Lima Congress of School Administrative Personnel and Allen County Council for Exceptional Children. He was vice president of the Lima PTA Council, councilman for the Lima Social Confab and chairman of the Lima/Allen Gang Coalition. He was a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Midwest Gang Coalition, the Ohio Retired Teachers Association and the Allen County Retired Teachers Association. He was a life member of the Lima PTA Council, the Ohio PTA Council and the National PTA Council. He also was a member of Kiwanis Club International and the Lima Social Confab.

He had received several awards and commendations, include the Jennings Scholar-Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, was inducted into the Lima City Schools Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame, named an Outstanding Secondary Educator; Who’s Who in American Education and the Outstanding Teacher in Ohio, represented Ohio at the National Salute to Education, was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the Lima PTA Council and received the Lima Education Association Human Relations Award

He received a bachelor’s degree in education from Central College, master’s degree in guidance and counseling from St Frances University and a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Dayton. He continued post-graduate studies at Bowling Green State University, The Ohio State University, Ohio University and Wright State University.

Survivors also include two sons, Jonathan Mark Miller and Jason Daniel Miller, both of Lima; three daughters, Michelle M (Mark) Neal, K Susanne (Reg) Good and Melanie K (Scott) Engle, all of Lima; six brothers, Eldon Miller and John Miller, both of Lima, Robert Miller of Cridersville, Donald Miller of Uniopolis, Richard Miller of Delphos and Ronald Miller of Beavercreek; six sisters, Betty Eberle of Cridersvile, Helen Gross, Marcella Pitchford and Erma Gross, all of Wapakoneta, Shirley Stanley of Muskogee, Oklahoma, and Carolyn Miller of lima; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Miller; and two sisters, Ruth and Mary Lou Miller

Services will begin at 3:00pm Friday at Siferd Funeral Homes, Westwood Chapel. The Revs Daniel H Messner and B LaMont Monford Sr will officiate. Burial will be in Spencerville Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 today at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Lima Senior Scholarship fund.
